Tips for the Perfect Fall Family Photo Shoot

October 18, 2019

Have you noticed that a lot of families choose to take professional photos in the fall? Just scroll through your Instagram feed. I'll bet you'll find a handful of professionally taken photos at the pumpkin patch or a local farm, perhaps even at a neighbourhood park. There's good reason why fall is the prime time for family photos -  the colours are absolutely gorgeous this time of year, the sky is the perfect blend of sunny and overcast, and no one is sweating in the photos (bye, summer). Fall is the ultimate picture taking season!

I teamed up with my photographer friends Riley Jade Photography and Madison Paige Photography  for tips on taking the best outdoor photos with your family this year. Because, we all know you want to take family pics while the leaves are still pretty, right?

Tips on the perfect fall family photo shoot:

  1. Choose the perfect location- emphasize on fall colours (trees, leaves, bridges, farms, pumpkins etc.)

  2. Select the time of day with the best outdoor natural lighting- usually the morning works best. Overcast skies work well too!

  3. Coordinate with your family- you and your family are the main focus in the photos. Dressing according to the weather is ideal & wearing the perfect colours make for great pics! But, don't get too matchy matchy - find prints and colours that compliment each other, the season and your backdrop.

  4. Use minimal props- a blanket with a subtle print can be utilized in many ways; to sit down on or wrap around. Let nature be the star, since fall offers the best of nature's beauty!

  5. Always take those portrait shots, but candid, unplanned moments make for the most heartfelt keepsakes. Don't stress if the kids aren't cooperating, sometimes these moments make for the best candid shots.

  6. Work with your family to make the children comfortable & happy. Let the kids know ahead of time that someone will be taking their photos to give them time to warm up.

  7. Have fun! Just be yourself, as cliche as that sounds! Being too posey or fake will come across in your photos.
